DRC Seeks New Chinese Mining Investments as Louis Watum Engages JCHX Mining

Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) Mines Minister Louis Watum Kabamba is engaging Chinese mining company JCHX Mining on new investment opportunities in the country as Kinshasa seeks to deepen cooperation with Chinese investors and expand its mining sector.

Watum is in China as part of the DRC delegation attending the 28th China Mining Conference and Exhibition in Tianjin, where the government is promoting the country’s mineral potential and opportunities across the mining value chain.

During a working visit to JCHX Mining, Watum and company representatives discussed opportunities for expanding the group’s investment footprint in the DRC.

The engagement is focused on strengthening cooperation in mining and exploring potential investments in mineral exploration, production and local value addition.

JCHX Mining is an international mining services and engineering company with experience in mine development, construction and operations. The company has an established presence in the DRC, including through its involvement in copper mining projects.

The discussions form part of the DRC government’s broader efforts to attract additional Chinese investment while encouraging companies to move beyond the extraction of raw minerals and contribute to local processing and value creation.

Watum has consistently emphasised the need for the DRC to capture greater economic value from its substantial mineral resources.

The government is seeking investments that can support industrialisation, technology transfer, employment and the development of local supply chains.

The engagement with JCHX Mining also comes as the DRC seeks to strengthen its position as a major supplier of copper, cobalt, lithium and other critical minerals needed for the global energy transition.

For Chinese investors, the DRC offers access to some of the world’s largest deposits of strategic minerals, while Kinshasa is seeking long-term partnerships that can support infrastructure development and greater domestic participation in the mining industry.

The discussions with JCHX Mining therefore form part of the DRC’s wider strategy to convert its mineral wealth into broader industrial and economic opportunities while strengthening its investment relationship with China.
